From the alpine elegance of Saint Moritz, where Nietzsche conceived some of his most decisive ideas while contemplating the Engadine lakes, to the commanding presence of the Matterhorn in Zermatt, and from the collections of the Kunstmuseum Basel to the cutting-edge architecture of the Novartis Campus and Vitra Campus, each stage offers a distinct way of seeing.
Nine days of customized travel in Switzerland where Swiss precision, alpine silence, and the beauty of the moving landscape are the true protagonists: a charming journey aboard the Bernina Express and Glacier Express that we invite you to enjoy with Tempodart. It would be unthinkable to undertake a bespoke journey to Switzerland without pausing to understand how the alpine landscape has shaped thought and creation. Visiting the Nietzsche-Haus in Sils Maria, gazing at the night sky from 3,089 meters atop the Gornergrat, or immersing oneself in the Beyeler Foundation’s collection (a Renzo Piano masterpiece) are experiences that transcend conventional cultural tourism.

A 9-day cultural journey through Switzerland, travelling south to north aboard two of the world’s most spectacular panoramic trains: the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express. Three alpine destinations and an exceptional cultural city form the thread: Tirano, Saint Moritz, Zermatt, and Basel.

We will stay in carefully selected hotels that are part of the journey itself: the historic Kulm Hotel St. Moritz *****S, one of the great icons of alpine hospitality tradition; the intimate Hotel Bellerive **** in Zermatt with views of the Matterhorn; and the cosmopolitan Nomad Design & Lifestyle Hotel **** in Basel, a benchmark of contemporary Swiss design.
A tailor-made train journey through Switzerland with everything arranged: flights, 8-day flexible Swiss Travel Pass, first-class travel on the Bernina Express and Glacier Express with catering included, dinner and astronomical visit at the Gornergrat observatory, tickets to all museums and foundations listed in the itinerary (Nietzsche-Haus, Kunstmuseum Basel, Beyeler Foundation, Novartis Campus, Vitra Campus), transfers, accompanying guides, and travel insurance. All designed so you only need to focus on enjoying.

We will lose ourselves among glaciers and seemingly impossible viaducts in Saint Moritz, ascend to 3,057 meters atop Piz Nair overlooking the Engadine mountains, behold the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat observatory, and immerse ourselves in Europe’s most vibrant artistic and architectural scene in Basel.
In December, Switzerland takes on a special dimension: snow transforms the landscape, the light shifts by the hour, and alpine villages wrap themselves in an intimate, contemplative atmosphere. It is the perfect time for this signature journey to Switzerland.

Summary: The day begins with a flight from Barcelona to Milan. Upon arrival, a private transfer to Tirano, a small Lombard gem at the foothills of the Alps, gateway to one of the world’s most impressive railway routes. A gentle first encounter with the alpine landscape that prepares us for what lies ahead.
Details: In the morning, we take a scheduled flight from Barcelona to Milan Malpensa Airport. Upon arrival, a private transfer will take us to Tirano, a town in Lombardy near the Swiss border.
Traveling to Tirano is much more than a transit point. This tranquil enclave with historic character preserves the charm of its medieval past among narrow streets, Renaissance churches, and a landscape that foreshadows the alpine grandeur awaiting us. Surrounded by mountains and paced by the local way of life, the village offers a serene welcome to the journey.
We will stay at the Hotel Stelvio ****, located very close to the train station to facilitate access to the Bernina Express, with which the real experience begins the following day. Its bright, minimalist interiors, conceived with discreet and elegant luxury, provide a peaceful refuge after travel.
The afternoon is free to explore Tirano’s historic centre, stroll by the Basilica of Madonna di Tirano—one of northern Italy’s most important sanctuaries—and soak in the unhurried rhythm of local life before the grand railway adventure begins tomorrow.
Summary: After breakfast, we board the legendary Bernina Express to experience one of the world’s most spectacular railway journeys. The train ascends from Tirano to 2,253 meters at the Bernina Pass, crossing a UNESCO World Heritage route, arriving in Saint Moritz, one of Europe’s most iconic alpine destinations. Accommodation at the iconic Kulm Hotel.
Details: Breakfast and check-out. In the morning, we board the legendary Bernina Express, considered one of the most spectacular railway journeys on the planet and among the most memorable train trips in Switzerland.
This panoramic train of the Rhaetian Railway takes us from Tirano to Saint Moritz, crossing the majestic Bernina Pass on a route declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, during which the landscape unfolds like a cinematic sequence: the spiral viaduct of Brusio, glaciers seemingly within reach, deep blue frozen lakes, and snowfields reflecting light with an almost unreal intensity.
The train gently climbs to 2,253 meters altitude, allowing us to witness the gradual transformation of the landscape: from the warm tones of the Italian valley to the high Swiss mountains in all their splendour. The large panoramic windows turn every moment into a unique visual experience.
Arrival in Saint Moritz—situated at 1,856 meters above sea level—marks the encounter with one of Europe’s most emblematic alpine destinations. This town perfectly balances tradition, sophistication, and nature. Surrounded by crystal-clear lakes, forests, and snow-capped peaks, it has historically been a refuge for artists, thinkers, and travellers seeking beauty and calm.
Upon arrival, check-in at the emblematic Kulm Hotel St. Moritz *****S, one of the great icons of alpine hospitality tradition. Perched in a privileged position overlooking Lake Saint Moritz, the hotel commands the entire valley with open, luminous views capturing the essence of the Engadine landscape. Opened in 1856, it was the birthplace of winter tourism in the Alps: its owner Johannes Badrutt invited a group of English clients in 1864 to return in December, promising that if they did not enjoy it, he would pay for their return trip. They stayed until Easter. The Kulm was the epicentre of that transformation.
The rest of the day is free to enjoy the town and the extraordinary stay at this historic hotel complex.
Summary: A day to leisurely enjoy Saint Moritz and its privileged surroundings. A stroll through the town centre, ascent via the Corviglia funicular to 2,400 meters, and cable car to Piz Nair at 3,057 meters overlooking the Engadine landscape. In the afternoon, visit to the Nietzsche-Haus in Sils Maria, where the philosopher conceived some of his most decisive ideas while contemplating the lakes and mountains.
Details: Breakfast at the hotel. Today is dedicated to calmly enjoying Saint Moritz and its privileged environment, letting ourselves be carried by the slow pace of high mountain life.
The morning begins with a walk through the town centre, discovering some of its most emblematic sites: the frozen lake of St. Moritz, which in winter becomes a unique stage of almost surreal beauty; the elegant Via Serlas—one of Europe’s most exclusive shopping streets; the leaning tower of St. Maurice’s Church, a vestige of the old medieval town still dialoguing with the destination’s contemporary sophistication; and the Chesa Futura, the iconic housing project designed by Norman Foster that has become a symbol of the contemporary city.
Throughout the day, the landscape remains a constant protagonist: the changing light on the snow, the silence of alpine forests, and the majestic presence of the surrounding mountains create an unforgettable atmosphere.
We continue our experience ascending with the Corviglia funicular to over 2,400 meters altitude. From there, the Piz Nair cable car will lift us above the alpine landscape: an impressive view over the Engadine mountains at 3,057 meters, from one of the most extraordinary viewpoints in the Swiss Alps.
In the afternoon, we travel to Sils Maria to visit the Nietzsche-Haus, the house where Friedrich Nietzsche spent several summers and developed fundamental parts of his philosophy—including the conception of eternal recurrence and ideas that shaped Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Now a museum, it preserves the simplicity and seclusion that marked his stay. The visit offers insight not only into his daily life but also into the intimate relationship between his philosophy and this environment of lakes, light, and mountains, where nature and thought seem to merge into a single experience.
Note: The visit to Sils Maria is pending confirmation. If access is not possible, it will be replaced by a visit to the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.
Return to the Kulm Hotel and overnight stay.
Summary: Today we experience one of the great highlights of this bespoke train journey to Switzerland: the legendary Glacier Express from Saint Moritz to Zermatt, crossing the heart of the Swiss Alps in nearly 8 hours of pure landscape. 91 tunnels, 291 bridges, and the Landwasser viaduct as stellar moments. Arrival in Zermatt and accommodation at Hotel Bellerive.
Details: Breakfast and check-out from the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. Today we embark on one of the trip’s great experiences: the journey aboard the legendary Glacier Express, known as the “slowest express train in the world,” a perfect paradox that sums up its essence: moving unhurriedly to savour every moment of the landscape.
This panoramic train takes us from Saint Moritz to Zermatt, crossing the heart of the Swiss Alps. The journey—lasting nearly 8 hours—passes through breathtaking mountain scenery, crossing 91 tunnels and 291 bridges, including the famous Landwasser viaduct, an engineering marvel that seems to defy gravity as it integrates with the landscape. One of the highest points is the Oberalp Pass, over 2,000 meters above sea level, offering expansive views of valleys, lakes, and snow-capped peaks.
Through its large windows, the landscape constantly transforms: deep valleys, bridges suspended over impossible gorges, wooden villages seemingly frozen in time, and frozen rivers accompanying the journey like a constant presence. There is something almost hypnotic about this trip: the train’s rhythm, the silence of the snowy landscape, and the sensation of traversing a territory that slowly reveals itself, unadorned.
The Glacier Express is much more than a scenic route. It is a way of understanding Switzerland: precision, silence, contemplation, and absolute respect for the landscape.
Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s most emblematic alpine villages, situated at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn. Free of automobile traffic and deeply linked to the history of European mountaineering, it retains the traditional character of a high mountain village with old wooden houses, quiet streets, and an elegant, welcoming atmosphere. Arriving in Zermatt after the Glacier Express is a nearly natural transition between two worlds.
Upon arrival, check-in at the cosy Hotel Bellerive **** or similar, a family-run boutique hotel with privileged views of the Matterhorn that combines natural materials, warm minimalist aesthetics, and authentic, close hospitality.
The rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy the alpine and festive atmosphere of the village.
Summary: One of the most anticipated days of the journey. At midday, the historic Gornergrat Railway—rack railway—will take us to 3,089 meters at the Gornergrat observatory, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Alps, with over twenty peaks above 4,000 meters on the horizon and the Matterhorn as the dominant silhouette. At nightfall, we will gaze at the alpine sky from the observatory and enjoy a dinner surrounded by mountains at altitude.
Details: Breakfast at the hotel. Today promises to be one of the most eagerly awaited days of this cultural journey to Switzerland.
Around midday, we take the historic Gornergrat Railway, a rack railway ascending from Zermatt to 3,089 meters altitude. As the train climbs, the landscape progressively opens: alpine forests, snowy slopes, and natural viewpoints foreshadow what lies ahead.
Arrival at Gornergrat is simply breathtaking. From this privileged vantage point, one can behold one of the most spectacular panoramas of the Alps, with over twenty peaks above 4,000 meters surrounding the horizon. Among them, the Matterhorn emerges with an almost magnetic force, its perfect silhouette having become one of the world’s most recognizable icons.
At nightfall, this place acquires a particularly magical atmosphere: the altitude, the purity of the air, and almost no light pollution make Gornergrat a privileged site for observing the alpine sky. During our visit to the observatory, we will contemplate constellations, stars, and the vastness of the firmament in an environment of exceptional silence and darkness.
After the visit, we will enjoy a dinner at altitude, surrounded by the nocturnal mountain landscape, in a unique experience combining nature, astronomy, and alpine gastronomy. The contrast between sky, snow, and rock, along with the silence of the heights, creates an atmosphere difficult to describe, where the landscape ceases to be merely a backdrop and becomes a deeply emotional experience.
After enjoying this unique setting, we return by rack railway to the hotel in Zermatt.
Summary: Today we leave the alpine universe behind to enter a new dimension of the journey: urban, cultural, and contemporary Switzerland. Train from Zermatt to Basel in approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival, the Christmas markets at Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz offer the perfect welcome to Switzerland’s cultural capital.
Details: Breakfast and check-out. Departure by train from Zermatt to Basel on a journey of approximately 3 hours crossing the country from south to north through the Rhone valley. Gradually, the landscape transforms: snow-capped peaks give way to gentle hills, wide rivers, and a more open territory heralding arrival in one of Europe’s great cultural capitals.
Upon arrival, transfer to the Nomad Design & Lifestyle Hotel ****, an elegant design hotel located in the heart of Basel, just steps from the historic centre and the city’s main museums. Set between a historic 1950s building and contemporary architecture, it combines minimalist lines, warm materials, and a cosmopolitan, welcoming atmosphere. The Buchner Bründler studio has created an elegant dialogue between history and modernity: exposed concrete, warm woods, artisanal textiles, and bespoke furniture configure a sophisticated environment.
In December, the city’s historic squares transform into a stage full of light and tradition: the famous Christmas markets at Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz fill the centre with stalls of crafts, local specialties, mulled wine, and traditional Swiss decorations. Strolling among the illuminated façades, alongside the cathedral and medieval alleys, is an especially atmospheric and welcoming experience marking the perfect start to our stay in Basel.
Accommodation in Basel. Rest of the afternoon free.
Summary: A day dedicated to exploring Basel from its most cultural and historical dimension. In the morning, a tour of the historic centre with the Basler Münster cathedral and the Town Hall (Rathaus) as highlights. In the afternoon, a visit to Kunstmuseum Basel, considered the oldest public art museum in the world, with works by Holbein, Picasso, Cézanne, Chagall, Klee, and Giacometti.
Details: Breakfast at the hotel. We dedicate the day to exploring the city from its most cultural and historical perspective.

We will stroll through the old town, its shopping streets, and squares, where local life and centuries-old architecture coexist in harmony, making Basel one of Europe’s most pleasant cities to explore on foot.
In the afternoon, we delve into the collections of Kunstmuseum Basel, considered the oldest public art museum in the world and one of Europe’s largest cultural institutions. Its collection spans several centuries of Western art history, from the Renaissance to 20th-century avant-garde and contemporary art.
During the visit, we will discover some of its most famous masterpieces, including the impressive series of paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger, created in Basel, including the haunting The Body of the Dead Christ in the Tomb. The museum also houses important works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, and Alberto Giacometti, as well as key pieces of German Expressionism by artists such as Franz Marc and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
The visit will allow us to understand Basel’s fundamental role as a city of collectors, patrons, and major cultural institutions, in a museum that brings together some of the most important works of modern European art.
Return to the hotel and overnight in Basel.
Summary: Today we explore the region’s most contemporary and architectural facet. In the morning, a visit to the Beyeler Foundation, a unique museum by Renzo Piano where art, light, and nature constantly interact, housing one of the world’s most important modern and contemporary art collections. In the afternoon, the Novartis Campus: an extraordinary urban laboratory where Herzog & de Meuron, Frank Gehry, SANAA, David Chipperfield, and Álvaro Siza define contemporary architecture.
Details: Breakfast at the hotel. Today we delve into Basel’s most contemporary and architectural side.
In the morning, we head to the Beyeler Foundation, a unique museum both for its collection and its architecture and integration with the landscape. Designed by Renzo Piano, the building opens to the natural surroundings, creating an experience where art, light, and nature constantly dialogue. Its modern and contemporary art collection is among the world’s most important, featuring works by Monet, Picasso, Giacometti, Bacon, Warhol, and Koons, among many others. The quality of natural light flooding its galleries, filtered through the translucent roof designed by Piano, makes each visit an unrepeatable aesthetic experience.
In the afternoon, we visit the Novartis Campus, one of contemporary Europe’s most innovative urban and architectural interventions. Conceived as a true “city of knowledge,” this space gathers buildings designed by some of the world’s most influential architects: Herzog & de Meuron, Frank Gehry, SANAA, David Chipperfield, and Álvaro Siza. Situated alongside the Rhine, the campus combines scientific research, cutting-edge architecture, public art, and landscaped spaces in an environment carefully designed to foster idea exchange and creativity.
The visit will reveal a contemporary, international Basel deeply linked to innovation, where architecture reflects a new way of thinking about the city and knowledge.
Return to the hotel, overnight stay, and rest of the afternoon free.
Summary: The final day of this bespoke journey to Switzerland takes us, just a few kilometres from Basel, to the extraordinary Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany): one of the world’s most influential sites for contemporary architecture and design, with buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, SANAA, and Herzog & de Meuron. Afternoon free in Basel before the return flight to Barcelona.
Details: Breakfast and check-out.
On the last day, in the morning, we cross the German border just a few kilometres from Basel to visit the extraordinary Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein. During the visit, we will discover iconic spaces such as the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry—considered a fundamental work of deconstructivist architecture—the Fire Station by Zaha Hadid, one of the Iraqi-British architect’s first constructed buildings, and the delicate pavilions and landscaped areas that make the complex a unique experience.
Beyond architecture, the Vitra Campus reflects the close relationship between design, art, industry, and everyday life, in an environment where each building dialogues with the landscape and the ideas of its time. It is one of Europe’s most extraordinary concentrations of contemporary architecture and a perfect conclusion to a cultural journey through Switzerland that has explored beauty in all its forms: alpine landscape, thought, art, and architecture.
